Some Foods To AVOID With Diabetes

Sorry - Burgers and White Flour Buns are Out!Ok, it’s not going to come as any surprise to learn that there are definitely a LOT of foods to avoid with diabetes. You knew that.

Especially if you have type 2 or “adult onset” diabetes. You already KNOW that you should stay totally away from processed, refined foods. You already KNOW that fast food (aka “junk food”) is out.

Look. Do you want to get well? If you really want to get well, then it is time to take this bull by the horns and STOP eating garbage.

Plain and simple.

The very first thing you need to start doing (in my humble opinion) is to start reading food labels. This is not a game. This is serious. It’s your LIFE we’re talking about here! When I watched the movie “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” the other night, I was absolutely amazed at what I learned. I honestly thought I knew a lot more about true nutrition than I did.

The guys featured in the movie weren’t contending with diabetes (yet), but they were struggling with other health issues – and obesity was one of them.

If you are a type 2 diabetic, the odds are probably pretty good that you’re also struggling with your weight, at least a little. Because obesity is definitely something that can lead not only to diabetes, but a host of other illnesses as well.

So, here’s a SHORT LIST of some foods diabetics should avoid. Even if you haven’t yet been diagnosed with diabetes, and are just trying to head it off at the pass (which is what I’m personally doing right now), here it is. I’m not saying that giving up some of these things is easy. But what if you just started a little at a time? No junk food this week… Then next week, maybe have a day of only plant-based meals (that is, no meat or dairy). Then maybe the next week cut out the coffee or tea… or whatever.

If you’re “craving” meat or some animal protein, grab a handful of almonds and see if that helps.

Again, this is just a short list of foods to avoid – not only to help prevent or reverse diabetes – but for wellness in general.

Meat – I honestly am having a hard time finding anything positive about meat since the guys whose information I’m studying (Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Robert O. Young, Dr. Julian Whitaker, Matt Traverso, and a host of other well-known and highly respected experts) are all making some VERY compelling arguments about why we shouldn’t be consuming an animal-based diet.

Sugar – I think this one goes without saying. But a lot of people don’t realilze just how much sugar is in the everyday foods we eat. By the way, I don’t care WHAT TV commercials that the Corn Refiners Association puts out there, if the label says “high fructose corn syrup,” it’s something you probably don’t want to be eating.

Alcohol – I think this goes without saying as well. I can’t find one single person in this field who says it’s ok. In addition to being a poisonous substance to our liver, it adds empty calories. It’s also a depressant. So, if we’re already dealing with a potentially fatal disease, so we really need to add additional depressants?

Caffeine – Poison. According to Matt Traverso in his Reverse Diabetes Now! book, it was “more than 200 acids.” He also mentions that the energy we THINK we’re getting from caffeine is actually “from the body’s struggle and effort in neutralizing this poison.” (page 53, Reverse Diabetes Now!)

Processed Fats – We can go on and on about this, but for now, anything on a food label that says “partially hydrogenated” or “hydrogenated” is something you should avoid.

Milk – Humans were meant to drink mother’s milk in infancy. Not all throughout our lives. It does begin to sound a little gross to think that we’re drinking the milk of another mammal. I’m not going to get into an argument here. You don’t have to take my word for it. Why not read this interesting letter that a Dr. Robert M. YUCK!

White Flour – I know, this is a tough one! Do the best you can – switch over to as many whole grains as possible. If you haven’t tried the “Ezekiel 4:9” brand of sprouted grain breads, you’re in for a treat! It has no flour in it at all. Please note: It is NOT gluten free – but it doesn’t have white flour (The company, Food For Life does have gluten free products, I just haven’t seen them around too much yet up where I live). Ezekiel 4:9 products are typically frozen, and most large supermarkets now carry it in their natural foods sections. If, for some reason you can’t find it in your local supermarket, try a specialty health food store, or on Amazon (I found it here).

So, again, this was not an exhaustive list, but these appear to be the “biggies” when it comes not only to preventing or reversing diabetes, but also to help prevent other nasties as well.

What Is Diabetes Anyway?

In the simplest of terms, diabetes – or “diabetes mellitus” –  is a medical condition that causes a person to have an elevated blood glucose (or “sugar”) level.  As I understand it, it’s usually because the body isn’t 1) producing enough insulin to begin with or 2) can’t properly use the insulin that is being produced. There are three  main types of diabetes: type 1, gestational and type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood. It occurs when the pancreatic cells cannot produce insulin. A few people I know have type 1, and are heavily insulin dependent – that is, they either need daily injections of insulin, or, in a couple of people I know, they actually have an insulin pump that they actually “wear” – it delivers the insulin automatically (in their case – it may be different for other people) through this little tube into . One guy I know has lived many, many years with an insulin pump – and is doing very well, all things considered.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreatic cells produce insulin, but the body is unable to use it. Type 2 is the most common form of this condition.  This is the type my Dad has and has been taking oral medication for over the last 10 or 15 years. This is type also known as “adult onset” diabetes. I could (and probably will) go into this a lot more since I’m kind of on a “lifestyle improvement” path myself. Frankly, I do not want to be depending on medication if I can control this myself. Hence this website.

But I digress…

Finally, gestational diabetes is a form of type 2 diabetes that affects approximately eight percent of pregnant women. I have known at least 3 different young women who developed gestational diabetes – but fortunately, none of them have this issue. It did seem to resolve itself after their kids were born. However, one thing I noticed was that in one of the young moms I know, I also know her mom, and I recall her mom telling me that she does have type 2. So, I don’t know if there is a tendency toward the disease in this case…

What are some of the symptoms of diabetes?

Frequent urination, weight loss, hunger and increased thirst are some of the main symptoms of diabetes. It is important to note that diabetes has a tendency to develop very slowly. That is why many people may not show any symptoms initially. This is particularly true for people who have type 2 diabetes. Many patients with diabetes live with it for years before they are formally diagnosed.

What Causes Diabetes (type 1 and type 2)?

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes remains unknown. However, researchers believe that it is caused by a genetic defect.  Type 2 diabetes is strongly correlated with being overweight. In fact, over eight percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Gestational diabetes occurs when the pregnancy hormones prevents insulin from doing its job.

You noticed that I “bolded” and “italicized” the bit about being overweight. Folks, this is just the tip of the iceberg! I’m really going to be tackling this topic here. We need to wake up and face this headon if we’re going to improve our lives. More on this later…

So, how can diabetes be prevented?

Because the exact causes of type 1 diabetes are not understood, there is nothing that people can do to prevent it. I remember one friend of mine who had been diagnosed when he was a very little boy told me that he had always been very active, and he didn’t eat junk food (frankly, there really just wasn’t a ton of junk food even available back in the early 60’s, at least in my memory. I never even saw a McDonalds until I was an adult!). This old friend had said that it just “happened” and he has lived with this all his life.

I am also very well aware that current, or at least most traditional medical doctors state that type 1 cannot be cured. I am also aware that there are DIFFERENT medical doctors today who do believe it can be cured. I’ll introduce some of them here as well. I don’t care if anyone says “well, it just cannot be cured.” I would (personally) prefer to find a doctor who would give me hope.

Type 2 diabetes can largely be prevented by exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight. Pregnant women can prevent gestational diabetes by seeking prenatal care early in their pregnancy. They also need to make sure that they keep their body weight within a healthy range.

Welcome to “How to Reverse Diabetes Naturally”

Welcome! I’m glad you are here! I’m assuming that you are here because you either 1) have diabetes, 2) know someone who has the disease (and you’re helping them find info about it), and/or 3) are interested in preventing and fighting this thing as naturally as you can.

That’s what brought me on this journey to begin with. My dad has Type 2 diabetes, and actually has been taking oral medication for it for at least 10-15 years (maybe even longer for all I know).

I just remember that one day I was visiting him and all or a sudden I saw all this “stuff” in the hallway bathroom. Charts, little “finger” blood test equipment, etc. I asked him how long he had been doing that, and he said, “Oh a while now… It runs in the family.”

For some reason, though, he just won’t change his lifestyle. Well… that’s not entirely true. A year ago he had a stroke on top of the diabetes, and he did change a few things. BUT, he still won’t exercise as much as he should, and he still won’t change his diet much.

So, knowing that I have a few things of my own to change, I’m going to do just that. And, I’ll share some of what I learn here at this site.
